Emiko Agatsuma lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. She is a Butoh dancer who reconstructs movements from our daily life, custom and traditional culture with her own philosophy, and creates new performances. She also directs the unique stage atmosphere with her aesthetics. She organized the Butoh performance collaborated with a Japanese tea ceremony master in 2016 and 2019. In 1999, she joined the Butoh company, Dairakudakan founded by Akaji Maro in 1972. Since then, she has been performing all Dairakudakan productions. She is not only a Butoh dancer but has also been recognized as a choreographer and a director. Her well-known works are “Hymn for flesh (Niku-no-uta, 2014)” and “Dancing Planets (2017)”. She got an award from Japan Dance Critics Association as the Best Young Artist, in 2015. She is also a Butoh instructor for years and gave lectures and workshops for professional performers in Taiwan and Japan.
