'LIP LOCK' Documentary with Latika Balachander
sub rosa
Lip Lock is a fashion brand designed by Latika Balanchander. This collaboration project documented the process of how the garment came alive from the paper to a beautiful piece of art, and a fashion film for the garment.
Throughout 12 weeks of documentation, we did not only get to know more about Latika in person, but also her belief in fashion and this particular design. The concept started with the idea of dystopia, expression, and uniformity. With that, we came up with the story behind the fashion film together and adopted the lines from the book 1984 by Geroge Orwell.
The concept of sub rosa reveals an individual(girl) looking for herself through three different reflective objects: Video camera, water, and mirror. As she got closer to seeing herself, the image became blurry, disrupted and collapsed. The intention behind the story is what we wanted to tell the audience, the process of self-cognition and the importance of individualism.
The name of sub rosa came from the meaning itself "under the rose" and "happening or done secretly". The whole fashion film portraited the girl by herself and running in the big empty factory. Is she hiding from someone? What is she running away from? Why is she alone? All these questions make sub rosa the title of the film.
