SHIFT
SHIFT is a collaboration project with dancer, Dada Pichmutta Puangtongdee. Her choreography expressed her story of leaving her hometown Thailand to pursue her studies and career in Singapore. The story of studying overseas related to me personally as well, which makes this project meaningful for both of us.
The choreography was composed of three different parts: safe zone, moving out and back to the home.
For the set design, we use simple sofa and tree branches to symbolize her hometown Thailand, where she felt safe to lay down and being herself. As the light off, she travels to the ground and starts her powerful and graceful movement to express her emotion of herself in a foreign place. In the last part, she was back to her safety zone.
Sound is another key storyteller of this dance film. At first, Dada didn't have any sound or music for both the first and last parts of her choreography. However, my team and I decided to add in some sound design to bring out more emotion and details for the film version. The remix of the sound in the first part comes from the ambient sounds of Thailand, which suggested the background story of Dada. Lastly, we emphasized on Dada's breathing in order to show the changes in her energy and state of mind.
